Question 1

What is a DNS Lookup and why is record integrity critical?

Accepted Answer

The Domain Name System (DNS) serves as the phonebook of the internet. A DNS lookup is the process by which a human-readable hostname (like getbox.de) is resolved into a machine-readable IP address. In IT administration, regular health checks of your DNS infrastructure are essential. Misconfigurations in the zone file can lead to website downtime, email delivery failures, or security vulnerabilities. Our tool queries authoritative name servers to validate the current status of your global DNS records and identify potential issues such as incorrect TTL (Time to Live) values or faulty routing paths.

Question 2

The A Record: The Bridge between Domain and IPv4

Accepted Answer

The A Record (Address Record) is the most fundamental type of DNS entry. It maps a domain to a specific 32-bit IPv4 address. When a user enters your URL, the A record directs the request straight to your web server. For experts, managing A records is particularly important in the context of high availability and load balancing. By setting multiple A records for a subdomain, a 'Round Robin' approach can be implemented to distribute traffic across different server IPs. An incorrect A record leads immediately to a 'Server not found' error (NXDOMAIN), making precise verification crucial.

Question 3

CNAME Records: The Logic Behind Alias Domains

Accepted Answer

A CNAME Record (Canonical Name) serves as an alias for another domain. Instead of pointing to an IP address, it points to a hostname. This is especially useful when using services like Content Delivery Networks (CDNs) or external platforms (like Shopify or GitHub Pages). A CNAME allows the underlying IP infrastructure to change without requiring an update to the customer's DNS entry. Pro tip: A CNAME record must never exist at the root (apex) of a domain, as this would interfere with other records like MX per RFC standards—modern providers often use 'ALIAS' or 'ANAME' records for this purpose.

Question 4

MX Records: The Backbone of Global Email Traffic

Accepted Answer

The MX Record (Mail Exchanger) is specifically responsible for routing email. It specifies which mail servers (MTAs - Mail Transfer Agents) are responsible for accepting messages on behalf of a domain. MX records work with priorities: a lower value indicates a higher priority. During a health check, experts verify if the MX entries point to the correct endpoints and if redundant backup servers are configured. Without correctly set MX records, emails become undeliverable or end up in infinite loops. Furthermore, synchronization between MX records and the corresponding A records of the mail servers is essential for spam prevention.

Question 5

TXT Records: Security, Verification, and SPF/DKIM/DMARC

Accepted Answer

TXT records are versatile text entries used today primarily for security and verification. They play a central role in email authentication:
1. SPF (Sender Policy Framework): Defines which servers are authorized to send email.
2. DKIM (DomainKeys Identified Mail): Adds a digital signature to emails.
3. DMARC: Provides instructions on how to handle emails that fail SPF or DKIM.
Additionally, TXT records are used by services like Google Search Console or Microsoft 365 to verify domain ownership. A DNS health check instantly shows if your TXT entries are syntactically correct, helping you maximize email deliverability and protect your domain from spoofing.
